Beyond that the job divides into reporting, which is telling the business what happened, and planning, which is helping it decide what to do next. Most people find the second half more interesting and spend more time on the first.
Control is the part that only gets noticed when it fails. Reconciliations, approvals, access, the audit trail. It is unglamorous and it is the reason the role needs a qualified person.
Qualifications, and when experience substitutes
ACA, ACCA and CIMA are the three routes and employers rarely mind which. ACA comes most often through practice and audit, CIMA through industry and management accounting, ACCA through both. What matters more is whether you have owned a close rather than contributed to one.
Qualified by experience is genuinely accepted in smaller businesses, particularly where someone has grown with the company. It closes fewer doors than people expect and more than it did a decade ago.
