Consultancy is design, analysis, modelling and approvals, mostly office-based with site visits. Contracting is delivery: temporary works, sequencing, site engineering and solving what the drawing did not anticipate. Contracting typically pays more earlier and asks more of your time.
Starting in consultancy and moving to contracting is common, and so is the reverse later on. The engineers who have done both are noticeably better at each.
The chartership question
Chartered status with the Institution of Civil Engineers is close to expected for senior design roles and much less so on the contracting side. It takes several years of recorded experience, a report and a professional review.
What matters practically is whether your employer runs an approved training scheme with a supervising engineer. That changes the route from something you assemble yourself into something with structure, and it is a fair question to ask at interview.
